Waiting
at Panchathan Record Inn for AR Rahman can be a unique
experience. Not that one gets bored, but a walk around
the place reveals that there are directors and musicians
waiting patiently for him.
One
of the people waiting is young director Jyoti Krishna
whose directorial debut film, 'Enaku 20 Unaku 18' is due
for release soon.
Vijay
: So what brings you to Panchathan. Thought that your
movie is complete.
Jyoti Krishna : Yeah, the movie is almost complete.
We have finished shooting 5 songs and only one song remains
to be shot.
Vijay
: That's good. It has been sometime in the making, isn't
it?
Jyoti Krishna : No. You see, any big movie takes
time to get made and moreover we've just taken over an
year to finish this.
Vijay
: So, are you getting the BGM done?
Jyoti Krishna : No !! im waiting for one song that
AR Rahman has recorded and is to give it to me today so
that I can begin shooting.
Vijay
: How have the songs come out?
Jyoti Krishna: Really really beautiful. AR Rahman
has put in his heart and soul for all songs in the movie.
It's an out and out commercial, youth oriented movie and
the songs are all potential chartbusters.
Vijay
: So when do we get to hear the songs?
Jyoti Krishna : We are aiming for a May release,
so the audio should be released in April as we need at
least a month for the pre-release publicity.
Vijay
: All the best for your movie and we hope it does well.
Jyoti Krishna : Thank you so much.
They
are the people who work behind the scenes, quietly and
sincerely. They make sure everything works with clockwork
precision. They probaby cannot afford to make any mistakes
since there are no retakes. Admist a steady stream of
visitors which includes directors, producers, singers,
musicians, mail delivery personnel and gate crashers !!
(yes!), Rita, the
front office staff at probably India's hottest music destination,
AR Rahman's Panchathan Record Inn agrees to a tete-a-tete
with Vijay Iyer.
Vijay
: How long have you been with AR Rahman and how do you
like the job?
Rita : Its been a little over seven months since
i joined the studio setup and its been very very challenging.
Vijay
: Do you have fixed times of work considering that its
a twenty four hour setup?
Rita : My job timings are usually from 10 am to
7 pm. After that, its mostly recordings that happen, so
no one is needed in the office.
Vijay
: Is it glamourous enough for you from your earlier jobs?
Rita : It would seem so but at times it is quite
boring too when 'Sir' (AR Rahman) is away for days together
and there are hardly any visitors.
Vijay
: So what's a typical day's work for you?
Rita : (laughs) You see there are people who walk
in expecting to meet 'Sir' and they get impatient when
i have to tell them to wait or come back later. You cannot
afford to antagonise them since they are all important
people. Some people think that i deliberately make them
wait when that can never be the case. Also, people leave
behind visiting cards and numbers and expect call backs
so i have to make sure that the information is passed
on to 'Sir'.
Then there are musicians and singers who walk in to collect
their payments or confirm their recording dates. Sometimes,
there is no one at all and sometimes there are so many
people with so many requests that it becomes hectic.
Vijay
: Im sure you are doing a great job. Thanks for your time
and views.
Rita : Welcome. Let me go and check if 'Sir' is
free for you to meet him.
