Issue 2-March 2003
What is Dhwanii ?
Column - B-Sides

"Before reaching this agreement, that all this Moulin Brun was a phenomenon sort-of, we'd glossed over (sound bite format) notions of identity, multiculturalism, "global village," Shania-Madonna, fusion food, NRI clout - and then right after the commercial break, the programme hostess dropped this:
Why do you think Bollywood is such a lifeline to India for south asians? As I said, everything was going well, as well as could be hoped for..."

Ameen Merchant muses over the sudden metamorphosis of the new Bollywood-Hollywood paradigm.

Column - Music Notes

"Did you know that A.R. Rahman’s father, Malayalam music director Ravi Sekhar, died of cancer? And the popular music director Mahesh Mahadevan who scored scintillating music for films such as ‘Nammavar’, ’Kuruthi Punal’, ‘Alavandaan’ (background score) and numerous jingles, recently lost his battle with cancer."

Dr.Pradeep Immanuel pens one more article that makes our love of music worthwhile..

Column - Sound Bytes

"It would have been hard to digest "Muqqala Mukabla", if it had been set to the scholarly Hindolam with all the sangathis and swaraprastharams of, say, "samaja Vara Gamana". Had it happened, Rahman would have probably satisfied the puritans. But me? The common man following him in his musical journey would have been left stranded. The common man, without structured musical training and knowledge, follows Rahman only because he is able to relate to the music, and hence the man himself."

TR Sankar shatters preconceived notions of Music.

Column -Rumbumbum

"From Illayaraja to Rahman, from RD Burman to Sandeep Chowta, everyone impacts us in some way or other. Since I am avid film music listener and not a critic of film music, I have always seen better horizons in film music than my friends. Some of my friends are either too praiseful of Rahman or they are the greatest fans of Illayaraja. This combination has made me sustain the balance and hear the best of both worlds..."

Make Peace, Not War

This is being written on the day that George Bush would have unleashed his war on Iraq i.e. March 20th. Being somewhere down the south of India on my vacation, the launch of this issue of Dhwanii too can draw parallels with the war - 'to be or not to be'. Many of you were really expecting this to be out much sooner and some of you would be apprehensive about the future issues. All I can say is that, being home made, fresh and pure, Dhwanii is a creation that is borne more out of love for 'sound' and the 'written word'...

Compose Yourself

Go Digital with your Guitar - Dr. Pradeep Immanuel

"A guitar’s natural sound can be layered with a synth pad that has been transposed down to give a rich thick sound that just might shake your boots!

Percussion : A Way of Life - Anurag Tripathi

"To me percussion’s is a way of life. This is probably the only discipline in music which does not require an expensive piece of instrument to make music. You can create rhythm on a table top with your fingers, a tin can, with a pen, pair of chop sticks, anything that resonates. I don’t need an elaborate drum kit to come up with a pattern. Two hands and a table top will do nicely. Of course the more the elements the more intricate your pattern can become."

Loopy Fun - Eswar Rangasubramoni

Computer based music composing has become a lot popular with the new breed of music composers. They have started talking about “Software Synths” and “Flangers” and “Filters” in music programs. These “synths” were basically not available to people who had just started to compose music due to the cost and maintenance troubles. Furthermore, nobody was ready to teach the techniques of using synthesizers, (synths as they are lovingly called). Nowadays, with the advent of software synthesizers that could be used on any normal PCs affordable by anybody.

Review - Steven Holtzman's book 'Digital Mantras'

Digital Mantras

"The late Steven Holtzman (a genius who passed away from us even before he reached his forties) takes us through a wonderful journey - from his meditative immersion into the sound of night crickets high up on the slopes of the Himalayas, through the history of language beginning with Sanskrit, the laws of grammar as established by Panini and later Noam Chomsky, through the history of western classical music, theories and structures as well in parallel, the abstract art movement characterised by the works of Kandinsky and brings in the Computer as the modern tool that is creating the synthesis between visual art, music and language..."
